Renewable Fuel Supply

Noviva has recently expanded its trading activities to include the purchase and sale of sustainably sourced Biomass Products.

Biomass is a renewable energy source and can be anything from energy crops to agricultural or forestry residues and biogenic waste. To ensure that the use of biomass for energy leads to meaningful CO2 reduction, cultivation and production must be carried out in a controlled, sustainable manner. The cultivation of biomass can impact biodiversity, carbon stocks, soil and air quality. The cultivation can also have social impacts around areas such as land rights issues, working conditions and through potential competition with the use of biomass by local communities in developing countries. Vattenfall continuously monitors our biomass sourcing to ensure the biomass we use is environmentally and socially sustainable.

We are entering into long-term off take agreements with producers and selling into the EU Energy Sector.

Compliance with Red II

The share of bioenergy to cover energy needs will increase significantly in the future as the revised Directive on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources (Directive (EU) 2018/2001 – RED II) outlines.

In order to ensure that biomass is produced sustainably, EU Member States have agreed on criteria that must be observed and documented by operators for the production of electricity and heat from biomass or biogas.

Voluntary certification systems such as The SURE Sustainable Resources Scheme is regarded as a legal way of documenting compliance with the RED II criteria. Certifying the sustainability of biomass guarantees high quality and transparency. Schemes that certify sustainable products must be audited and approved by the EU Commission to ensure full compliance with the RED II requirements. SURE was established in order to obtain this EU recognition and the scheme offers a feasible system that demonstrates compliance with the requirements of RED II in a transparent, reliable and legally secure manner.

Noviva is registered with SURE as a sustainable Trader and is in the process of receiving its accreditation. For more information, please visit https://sure-system.org/en/.
